Carrotmob.

New approaches to environmentalism are popping up all over. There are different alternatives to addressing consumer aspects of the movement-like buying organic, fair trade, or local products, etc. I have recently been reading about one that has made a presence here in San Francisco: Carrotmob. It organizes consumers to make purchases that give financial rewards to those companies who agree to make environmentally friendly choices.

You may wonder, how does this work? Just a couple months ago, Carrotmob (drawing in over 300 people), gathered outside of a small grocer in San Francisco. People lined up ready to make small purchases, under the agreement that the owner would replenish his shelves with organic and other environmentally friendly choices. On a typical day, the store made about $2000. On Carrotmob day, the store made over $9000! That gave the owner more than enough resources to buy green.

The concept is interesting. It takes a lot of organizing, but the pay-off seems worth it. I wonder if the trend will pick up in other parts of the country....
