| With all of the current weather catastrophes happening across the world, it's hard for me not to wonder: Is Mother Earth trying to tell us something? We are only 2 months into 2010 and the amount of environment-related deaths is unprecedented. Are we putting too much of a burden on our fragile planet? Are the recent catastrophes a natural retaliation to to our human footprint? In January, Haiti experienced a 7.0 earthquake that caused over 200,000 deaths. The country is still devastated--many people have been left without food, shelter, or other basic human needs. It is expected to take years before the nation has the resources to rebuild itself. Just this past week, Chile experienced a 8.8 earthquake--one of the strongest in centuries. The number of casualties is still in the hundreds, and the damage was far less than experienced in Haiti, but it was still a disastrous earthquake. As a result, tsunami warnings were given to Hawaii and the west coast of the US. Also this past week, almost 50 people were killed in France as a result of the catastrophic storm named Xynthia. Powerful winds and heavy rain caused many people to drown and some were hurt by falling branches and other debris. Some injuries and deaths were also reported in Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Belgium but the most occured in France. Is this a natural war? Is the planet fighting back? If so, Mother Earth is making a pretty powerful statement.
