Texas Reaches New Heights In WInd Power
(Monday, 08 March 2010) Written by greeniac511987
Texas, the biggest state on the U.S. mainland is definitely putting its vast space to use by making wind power thier number one priority. On Sunday February 28th, Texas broke a wind power electricity generation record with 6,242 megawatts, and that record was broken 5 days later once on March 5th with a grand total of 6,272 megawatts. This calculation doesn't even include megawatts generated from the "Panhandle," which brings the grand total of wind power production up even more!

According to recent numbers by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Texas has the capacity to produce a whopping 9,410 megawatts of wind energy.

However, since this is one of the largest amounts of power the state has ever had to store there are some issues that wind experts need to deal with.

Firstly, the state is working on how to transmit the power efficiently. Texas does not have sufficient transmission wires to move all the power from the remote, gusty areas of West Texas to cities like Dallas and Houston that are in need of the power.

Another issue Texas faces is the storage of this much wind power. Although it is great that the state is generating power from a virtually clean source, they need to find ways to store the power instead of having to use natural gas power plants running as an alternative in case they need to pick up the slack on days when there's a lack of wind.

However, these problems are not going to stop the state of Texas from being the leader in wind power in the United States. There are experienced engineers working to fix these problems so that the generated wind power will be used with efficiency.
