TOPIC: China's Thirst for BTUs
#548
China's Thirst for BTUs 10/10/2008 Karma: 0
I heard that the United States and China have a little trade agreement. China imports so much stuff to the US but the US does not export anything to China. But, because it would be a waste to travel all that way back with empty boats, China buys used plastic from the US. Instead of recycling it and turning it into products like all us good recyclers would like, China buys it so they can burn it for energy. Apparently plastic has a very high BTU content. (BTUs are British Thermal Units, which basically means the amount of energy or heat you can extract from something, which makes sense because plastics are petroleum-based.) So instead of reusing it, they burn it for energy. Burn it for energy. Think of all the carcinogens that come out of that and all the pollution!

I am not sure if this is true, but a very intelligent environmentalists friend of mine told me he read it in a magazine or newspaper. If this is true, what can we do about it? any suggestions?
