Extracting dirty, Canadian tar sands oil, transporting it through the U.S., and exporting much if it via the Texas Gulf Coast is an irresponsible strategy….unless you represent Big Oil. It does not serve the interests of the U.S.public that will have to endure oil spills, health problems, or rising fuel costs in Midwestern states, as oil is diverted, that could lead to increased unemployment. takeaction and use the existing letter they have already written. Just type in your info and send. It's obviously not in our best interest if this measure is being rushed. Not only would it initially add to the destruction of Canada's boreal forest but we would be supporting something that puts out three times more global warming pollution than conventional oil.

Latest update- transcanada announces they will build the pipeline from cushing to the gulf coast, to allow them to sell oil on the global markets, confirming that this pipeline never was about lowering domestic gas prices or increasing domestic supply of oil

in the latest twist and turn the Senate rejected an amendment today to expedite the Keystone XL process. Looks like that will calm the waters for a bit, although in the meantime transcanada is moving forward with a southern stretch of pipeline

In the latest turn of events Nebraskans turned out in droves to send a message to the State Department that they do not want Keystone running through their backyard. Thursday’s eight-hour hearing allowed members of the public to formally comment on the State Department’s draft supplemental environmental impact statement on the pipeline. It’s the only hearing State is expected to hold on the report, which effectively concluded that there is no environmental reason not to build the pipeline.

The Lincoln Journal Star describes the crowd at the hearing:

[H]undreds of critics with rural addresses, young, old and in between turned out in red, white and blue shirts with the words “Pipeline Fighter” spread across their chests. Tribal leaders also weighed in strongly against the project.

Nebraska has been a rallying point for environmental groups, landowners and ranchers who oppose the 1,700-mile proposed pipeline, which would carry diluted bitumen from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.

I can't believe they tried to say that was no environmental reason not to build it. In light of recent oil spills, do they really think that this couldn't possibly go wrong?
