Okay now i see where you're coming from.

I follow the same rule. If I can still salvage it, I'll give it a shot by cutting off the gross stuff.

Sometimes strawberries mold quickly after purchase.
I usually pick out the moldy ones and if any of them are only partially bruised/moldy, I'll cut off the bad part before washing them.

I heard that it's not a good idea to put moldy fruit in the compost heap, but I have also heard that it's not a big deal so long as it remains buried...do you know much about that?

I tried to find the answer to the question about mold on google.
I found a forum discussing the question that seemed to imply that moldy fruit was OK because it would decompose and that mold was part of the composting process. I did not find any warnings against mold in compost piles.
However, mold exposure could be problematic to people living in the home (if the compost is inside). This would probably only be a problem if the mold particles got into the air and was breathed in in large enough quantities to effect the health of the inhabitants. Probably, the moldy fruit would not have this effect, and burying it would do the trick.
I found this on google- does anyone have personal experience?
