Farmers markets and economy 02/24/2008 Karma: 0
I was searching for information about farmers' markets and came across the website for Marketumbrella.org
http://www.marketumbrella.org/
an organization associated with Loyola University New Orleans promoting public markets to ensure "the ecologies of local economies" through public markets and innovative projects.

This website caught my eye, because of the simultaneous emphasize on protecting the environment and reinvigorating local economies.

Among other items featured on their website are tools for farmers markets to measure their economic impact, manuals explaining how to facilitate the use of EBT (electronic food stamps) at markets, and examples of various New Orleans projects that promote their goals. Some of these projects help fishing families find markets (White Boot Brigade), elementary school children grow gardens (The Edible Schoolyard), and communities establish a local currency which generates a public fund to support New Orleans culture (Crop Circles).
