green cell phones? 08/10/2008 Karma: 0
So lately I have been hearing a lot about the incredible amount of toxic waste that is produced from the cell phone industry. I also read an article that discussed a green cell phone company and service, Credo Mobile.
See article here: http://www.thegreenguide.com/blog/freshfinds/1236
After looking at Credo's website- it looks like they allow you to donate one percent of any bill to an environmental organization. They are also offering PVC-free phones (PVC also known as Polyvinyl Chloride - a nasty plastic that has been linked with cancer and health problems).

It seems like a good deal, but it also makes me suspicious. I feel like there are a lot of people making a lot of money off of the green industry, and in this case, other than the money donated to environmental causes, the impact is not that much better. It is still better than nothing, but I am interested in your thoughts about the green industry and the impact that it is making in terms of environmental impact. Is it better because it is better than what we had before? Is it making things worse because it is tricking us into thinking that we don't need to make major cut backs in our opulent lifestyles? I'm not sure, but I am interested to hear what you think.

I guess I would say that it depends on the industry and the product, so it probably isn't fair of me to pose the question about the entire green industry in general.
