Dreaming of a Green Christmas 12/06/2007 Karma: 0
With the holiday that exudes the spirit of consumerism lurking around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to generate some discussion of how to reduce waste and conserve energy. Elegantly wrapped gifts sitting beneath a brightly lit tree is a picturesque sight during the holiday, but are there alternatives? Reusing wrapping paper? Reducing the amount of time you leave your Christmas lights on? Gifts you can give without buying? Alternative ways of showing your Christmas spirit? Can you even promote a green Christmas without association to the infamous Grinch?

Actually, finding products made from recycled materials would be a great way to help the cause. We all recycle, but do we buy products made from recycled materials? This issue was highlighted at the Co-op America San Francisco Green Business Conference, as we need to support companies that make products from recycled materials, otherwise there is no point to recycling. I have not yet gone shopping for boxes/wrapping paper/etc., but I will look for products that are made from recycled paper. If anyone knows where to find such products please pass along the info!

Gift Wrapping and Furoshiki 04/01/2008 Karma: 0
In terms of gift wrap one neat idea is to wrap the gift in cloth that can be reused. Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth which can be used to wrap gifts. The Minister of the Environment in Japan designed one of these cloths out of recycled material in order to promote the idea of using furoshiki internationally to reduce waste.
Check out the article on the Ministry of the Environment web page.

I should add that I heard about this from Wangari Maathai (a Noble Peace Prize winner for her environmental work) in a lecture she gave. The whole lecture was incredibly inspiring.
