Green Prices 12/01/2010 Karma: 0
I couldn't help but learn about the new "Reflect Kanteen" by Klean Kanteen because it was advertised on several environmental blogs that I peruse. It's a waterbottle, made of bamboo, stainless steel, and food-grade silicone... and it's $33? Is it just me, or is that an unreasonable price? My local supermarket sells steel BPA-free bottles with plastic caps for $5. Is the bamboo cap really worth $28? I think that inflated prices for green products are just another form of greenwashing. What do you think?

I agree with you. It is just a way for companies to capitalize and make money. This is one of the reasons why there are so many skeptics and so much resistance against the green movement. Because there is a premium price to pay to be "green," it is a great turn off. Sure the price for the bamboo cap may be a little higher because of the limited quantity and limited demand, but it should definitely not be that much higher.

I do agree with you....and do believe that inflated prices for "green" products can be an easy form of greenwashing. However, I do know that it is generally more expensive to produce "green" products or to even grow sustainable goods. It's a toss up! And a case by case argument.

What bothers me even more, is companies that charge more for green products, then continue to produce products that are horrible for the environment. They are only green when it is convenient and profitable. A company will brag that they are using post consumer paper in the office, then put up an enormous digital billboard using tons of energy. They need to be held more accountable somehow, people need to vote with their wallets better, and not be lulled into the sensationalism of green products that are just there to capitalize on a fad.
