Are most of the energy management opportunities primarily in older buildings?

Many people assume that energy management must only pertain to old buildings but that is not the case at all. I would say that over 90% of all commercial buildings regardless of age are energy inefficient.

There is very little correlation with efficiency and age of a building. The energy efficiency of a building is not assured just becuase the owner decided to purchase the most energy efficient systems. I have audited hundreds of buildings and have had many that were less than one year old that had all the latest technologies in place yet I was still able to reduce over 40% of their energy consumption.

The only way to know if your building is efficient or not is to benchmark the kilowatt hours per square feet per year. There are some good articles about how to measure your buildings energy efficiency here on Greeniacs.com
