hydrogen cars: the chicken or the egg? 10/03/2008 Karma: 0
A few weeks ago I read an article by the New York times that talked about hydrogen fueled cars. Now although I think they are far better environmentally than battery cars--because batteries have a lot of toxicity associate with their production--the Times brought up a good question when discussing new car technology: What should come first, the hydrogen car or the hydrogen fueling stations? I never really thought of this before because I just figured they would come out basically at the same time but this poses a huge problem for the advancement of hydrogen technology. If there are no stations for fuel, then no one will want to purchase a car with no energy source. But, if there are hydrogen stations before cars, investors or business owners could potentially lose a ton of money because it is a huge gamble to wait and see if hydrogen cars will even be wanted by consumers. So how do we fix this? Which should come first in order to ensure hydrogen fueled vehicles will be bought and used?
