This video is hilarious, and although it's a bit of a spoof, it's quite true. I live in LA where everyone drives just to go to the Starbucks down the street. I walk everywhere I can. It saves a lot of gas and is much better for the environment, not to mention it's an extra little workout! If everyone walks rather than drives to even just a few close destinations a day, it would help the environment a lot. In addition people could save a lot of money on gas because every little drive adds up.

I think you're absolutely right. In my experience, if people feel like it is convenient to drive, they will. I grew up in the suburbs, and everyone drove everywhere. Living in a city now, it is actually more convenient for most people to walk, bike, or take public transportation. Driving is expensive, and so is parking (if you can even find it). I wonder if local governments can find ways to create more walkable communities- perhaps places where it is inconvenient to drive (i.e. the parking is expensive or there just isn't much parking). In Chicago, I know there are a bunch of extra taxes on gas, as well, which is unpopular, but probably discourages people from driving.

There are cities in California that allow free parking for alternative fuel vehicles. Also, in San Francisco, we have "Spare the Air" days-where all public transportation is free to encourage people to take it.

I have also heard of businesses providing incentives to their employees for walking, biking, or taking public transportation. One of my roommates works for a new building going up in Golden Gate Park that is working to be one of the "greenest" buildings in the US. They give him extra pay for walking to work. I thought that was a really good way to promote alternative transportation....
