Green Hummer? Is that an oxymoron? 12/15/2007 Karma: 3
So! All you environmentalist military fanatics no longer have to be torn between your two passions. The gas2.0 weblog is reporting on a modified Hummer that gets 60 MPG. That's more than a Toyota Prius!

The one-of-a-kind automobile also cuts down on emissions with its hybrid biodiesel/electric engine. It also utilizes the technology of a jet engine, heh. Advances like these are encouraging because they show that being Green does not have to mean lifestyle sacrifices. Who wants to bet that Arnold is already ordering one of these to drive on his next gubernatorial campaign?

Are car company's adapting this kind of technology to make their cars more fuel efficient? And if not, why not if the technology is out there? Too expensive perhaps?

Yes, considering that the customized Hummer makes use of jet engines, I think it's mainly a price issue that makes this a novelty story.

However, if the practice was adopted by automotive companies, costs would go down and the technology would also improve. It just shows that big American cars can sip instead of guzzle if manufacturers actually put full effort and commitment into developing in the Green direction. As of now, their effort is half-hearted at best, appropriately symbolized by the proliferation of the hybrid midsize. I feel like development of AFV vehicles are mostly pet projects for all major car companies. They aren't really looking to advance environmental technology but rather to just satisfy the consumer demand.
